How Visuals and Audio Create Sundered’s Dark Fantasy

Sundered

Thunder Lotus Games’s upcoming Metroidvania Sundered offers a grim, lonely mood, and the developers have opened up about how that feeling is achieved.

Speaking exclusively OnlySP, the studio’s Marketing and Communications Specialist Rodrigue Duperron says that the audio presentation is vital to the evocation of atmosphere in the project. “We’re firm believers that sound design and music composition is the glue that holds it all together – a few minutes of playtime on mute should suffice to convince you: the ambiance created by the musical score in tandem with the sound design is what truly makes this lonely world come alive.”

Despite attributing much to the sound, however, Duperron makes sure to give the visuals their due attention, stating that the “visual conception of the assets to their artful disposition in claustrophobic layouts… certainly lay the foundation” for Sundered’s oppressive atmosphere. This tone is reinforced by the hand-drawn art style, which draws from and subverts the aesthetic of classic animated films.

“With the beauty and wonder you get from strange landscapes and beautiful animation, we don’t shy from going down a creepier and darker road. We want the suspense to be tangible in everything from the background to the enemies, to the sheer scale of the world you explore,” says Duperron.

Sundered is an upcoming Metroidvania heavily inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. The game is scheduled for release later this month on PC and PlayStation 4, though an exact date has not yet been announced. More details on the game are available in DJ’s preview of the game, and the recent interview that OnlySP conducted with Thunder Lotus Games.
