Valkyria Chronicles 4 Initial Sales Fall Short In Japan

Valkyria Chronicles 4

To the surprise of many ardent JRPG fans, Valkyria Chronicles 4 appears to have fallen well below Sega’s sales expectations in Japan in its first week of availability.

According to Media Create’s monthly analysis, the game has sold 62,921 units, which the site expects to be considered unsatisfactory, especially seeing as these figures show a 40% drop compared to the 2011 release of Valkyria Chronicles 3 on the PlayStation Portable, which shipped 103,000 units in its first week. However, the figures do represent an improvement over the first week sales of last year’s action-based spin-off Valkyria Revolution, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One. Additionally, Media Create’s sales figures do not factor in any potential digital sales of the title.

The publisher appears to be pushing for a soft reboot of the franchise given the release of Valkyria Chronicles Remasteredbut these meagre figures may disincentivise Sega’s high-risk commitment to the critically-acclaimed franchise.

Sega will be hoping the sale figures are given a huge boost when the game lands in the West and Australia on PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One later this year.
