Uncover the Secrets of the Universe in RPG Side-Scroller Kova

Kova

Kova is a new side-scrolling RPG that promises to grapple with one of the most bewildering questions of extraterrestrial science: the Fermi Paradox.

Developed by the small team at Black Hive Media, Kova is inspired by classic science-fiction narratives, and begins with the main character Kova Rimor’s ship being disabled during interstellar travel and forced to crash-land on a hostile, uninhabited world. While looking for resources to repair her ship, she comes across an ancient beacon, beginning a quest that will answer the question of why humanity seems alone in the universe, a question best known as the Fermi Paradox.

That mission will play out in the form of a 2D action-platformer in the vein of Contra, but with a wildly expanded story, skillset, and gameplay mechanics. As such, the developers have labelled Kova as a Metroidvania-styled action-RPG. Players will be able to engage in dialogue with NPCs, craft a number of different items, take on side-missions on a number of planets both hostile and benign, and use newly-unlocked abilities to explore the universe further.

In order to help fans better understand the gameplay, Black Hive Media livestreamed the first level on Twitch last Friday, the recording of which is embedded below.

In some respects, Kova is a reimagining of Chibi Chaingun, a 2009 iOS game that marked the first developmental partnership between the designer and programmer, Blake and Mandy Lowry. Although the concept remains very similar, the storyline and gameplay will enjoy the considerable expansion of depth that PCs and consoles allow.

Kova is currently on Kickstarter, seeking $28,000 with seventeen days to go. At the time of writing, the campaign was less than a quarter of the way to successful completion.

Providing the crowdfunding campaign is successful, Kova is expected to launch in late 2017. Although the team would like to bring the game to console, so far, it is only scheduled for release on PC.

OnlySP will continue to follow the development of this promising project, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.
