In a surprise move by Creative Assembly, the new Total War announcement was made a few hours ahead of schedule.

Total War: Warhammer II was officially announced by Creative Assembly on March 31, 2017. Even more surprising is the news that the game is slated to be released in 2017. Though no specific release date has been announced, fans can begin foaming at the mouth over the next installment in the heavy-hitting real-time strategy (RTS) franchise. Similar to its predecessor, Total War: Warhammer II will launch with four playable factions. The debut trailer can be watched below.

The first Total War: Warhammer was released on May 24, 2016 to mostly positive reviews. The game has received multiple expansions in the form of downloadable content (DLC), including more factions (Empire, Vampire Counts, Warriors of Chaos, etc.) and races (humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, etc.) for players to use in their campaigns and skirmish battles. Other DLC featured new lords and heroes.

Warhammer is a fantasy universe of games (tabletop and virtual) that made its debut in early 1983. The universe was created by Games Workshop and is largely inspired by Tolkien’s Middle-Earth (Lord of the Rings) and Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian series. The universe also draws inspiration from European history.

Creative Assembly, subsidiary of Sega, is arguably the most renowned developer of RTS titles. It made record-breaking sales with its benchmark game Shogun: Total War (released on June 13, 2000), which was the beginning of the Total War franchise as gamers know it. After its acquisition by Sega, Creative Assembly has gone on to develop several more Total War titles and even some console games, such as Halo Wars 2 and Spartan: Total Warrior.
