In the previous console generation, Gearbox made a name for themselves with the Borderlands series releasing two of the three games in the series, two of which (Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel developed by 2K Australia) will be released as part of the remastered Borderlands: The Handsome Collection for PS4 and Xbox One. Many expected Gearbox to announce Borderlands 3 for the new generation of consoles. Instead, Gearbox announced Battleborn, a new IP which has yet to receive a solid release date.
However, during Take Two’s Q3 earnings call this week (via VideoGamer), the publisher confirmed that Gearbox was developing a new Borderlands title specifically for next-gen consoles. The go-to assumption is that this will be Borderlands 3. Take Two naturally did not give a time frame for release, but its safe to assume that the next Borderlands will be coming after Battleborn, not before.
