Insomniac not Ruling out Sunset Overdrive Return

Sunset Overdrive 2

Sunset Overdrive was among the highlights of the early days of the Xbox One’s availability and developer Insomniac Games is keen to return to the series.

Speaking to GameInformer, Insomniac’s president, Ted Price, said that the team is “passionate about that franchise . . . so you may see more Sunset in the future.”

The original game, which released in 2014, was published by Microsoft Studios, though Insomniac Games retained the rights to the IP, meaning that future entries need not be tied to Microsoft platforms. Furthermore, though Price offered no promises of a continuation of the franchise, he did state that Sunset Overdrive “represents [Insomniac’s] willingness to create unexpected experiences.”

Sunset Overdrive was very warmly received on its release, earning an average score of 81 on Metacritic, though sales figures were reportedly very disappointing, which may explain why no sequel has yet been forthcoming more than two years on.

Since then, however, Insomniac’s output has proliferated, with the team releasing several mobile games; making a concerted push into the VR space with Edge of Nowhere, Feral Rites, and The Unspoken; and developing both the indie-styled metroidvania Song of the Deep and the Ratchet and Clank remake. The developer’s main project at present in the PlayStation 4 exclusive Spiderman game unveiled at E3 last year.

Although OnlySP did not review Sunset Overdrive, the game received extensive coverage on the site and a sequel would certainly ignite a similar level of enthusiasm.
