As part of a production update that also introduced new test footage of the game, Double Fine Studios has announced that Psychonauts 2 will be published by Starbreeze Studios.
This new deal will have Starbreeze contributing USD$8 million to the game’s development, in return for 60% of all ongoing profits after that sum is recouped. Starbreeze’s funding comes in addition to the money that Double Fine originally sunk into the game, as well as almost USD$4 million that was raised as part of a Fig crowdfunding campaign in early 2016. Despite the suddenness of this announcement, the acquisition of a publishing partner has been a part of the game’s developmental roadmap since the beginning.
The production update also mentions that the game is nearing full production, and the footage released alongside it showcases a near-final version of the visual style that the game will adopt. While the footage embedded below aims to capture the look of the game, none of the level design or specific assets are likely to be retained in the game’s final release.
Although Psychonauts 2 was initially envisioned to take place almost entirely in Psychonauts Headquarters, a desire to recapture a child-like sense of exploration has resulted in the expansion of the hub. As such, the Headquarters will be nestled within a forest environment that draws inspiration from the Pacific Northwest; inspirations that can be seen in the above video.
Double Fine has reportedly now locked in most of the gameplay elements and story beats for Psychonauts 2, as a means of ensuring the development goes as smoothly as possible.
In addition to today’s news, the company has announced that the virtual reality interquel Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin will release for PlayStation VR on February 21, 2017.
Psychonauts 2, meanwhile, is currently targeting a 2018 release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
