Obsidian Has Pitched Alpha Protocol 2 to Sega

Alpha Protocol 2

Despite a poor critical reception and reportedly hellish production cycle for the first game, Obsidian Entertainment has produced a pitch for Alpha Protocol 2.

Speaking to Eurogamer recently, the original game’s director Chris Parker confirmed that the team was interested in creating a sequel to the 2010 spy RPG, even going so far as to create a 35-to-40 page development document. According to Parker, the follow-up would have “revisit[ed] some of the gameplay systems to get some of the jankiness out of them and shore them up overall,” while also doubling down on the “reactivity” of Alpha Protocol.

In particular, Parker describes one feature as a “choice and consequence web people wanted to have in the interface so you could see your choices and how they spider-webbed through [everything].”

Unfortunately, the team is unable to move ahead on development of any potential sequel without the approval and backing of Sega, which owns the IP, but that situation was almost very different. Obsidian Entertainment was originally going to own the Alpha Protocol IP but the company’s CEO Feargus Urquhart explained that the unexpected cancellation of a Snow White and the Seven Dwarves spin-off (set to be published by Disney) forced the team to sign a contract relinquishing control to Sega.

The full interview goes in-depth about the troubled production of the game, detailing how much of the game was overhauled after a year and a half of development, and how that retooling resulted in the cancellation of the Alien RPG that was also set to be published by Sega.

Prior to Alpha Protocol, Obsidian had made for itself with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Knights 2, with the spy game as the team’s first original IP. Since then, the team has gone on to develop South Park: The Stick of Truth, Tyranny, and Pillars of Eternity, for which a sequel is currently in production.
