Nintendo has announced a remake of  its classic Metroid title Metroid II: The Return of Samus entitled Metroid: Samus Returns.

Longtime fans of Nintendo have been speculating as to whether Nintendo would revive their storied Metroid franchise. While a spin-off, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, was released in 2016, the game left many fans craving the single-player, story-driven Metroid experience of previous titles. At E3 2017, Nintendo finally shed light on a few new Metroid titles including a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus.

During Nintendo’s post-conference Treehouse livestream, the company revealed that a remake for the Gameboy classic Metroid II: The Return of Samus will be released on Nintendo 3DS. The remake will be called Metroid: Samus Returns.

The game’s debut trailer featured the kind of Metroid experience that fans of the series have come to know and love: a 2D-sidescrolling action-platformer game with adventure elements. The game will receive a graphical overhaul utilizing the Nintendo 3DS’s power. Some notable gameplay details include Samus’s ability to aim freely in all directions as opposed to either shooting straight forward or diagonally, and the ability to deflect enemy advances with a swift melee attack. The game also include new navigational features to assist in adventuring, such as Teleport Stations and map pins to keep track of significant areas.

Metroid: Samus Returns will make use of the console’s 3D feature. Die-hard fans of the series can look forward to a special edition with reversible cover and a soundtrack. The soundtrack will feature tracks from the game and other Metroid titles as well. The game will also introduce brand new Samus and Metroid amiibos.

Metroid: Samus Returns is scheduled to launch on September 15th 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS.
