Ninja Theory Releases New Trailer for Hellblade

Hellblade Ninja Theory

The latest Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice trailer reveals how the main character’s psychosis will sometimes force her to face off against unreal enemies.

Accompanied by narration that questions whether ideas of hell are manifestations of the individual’s thoughts, fears, and dreams, the trailer (embedded below) shows Senua caught in a rainstorm as a nightmarish creature draws near her. The voices that accompany Senua rise in a cacophony, speaking over each other in a babble of noise, as she turns to face the beast, a bizarre, baby-like manifestation:

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice promises to be fringed with uncertainty. The main character’s mental health issues will have a tangible effect on the entire experience, ranging from the voices and illusory manifestations revealed in the above trailer, as well as providing obstacles to progression and potentially offering puzzle solutions.

To ensure that the portrayal of psychosis remains respectful, the team at Ninja Theory have enlisted the assistance of The Wellcome Trust, as well as a range of healthcare professionals, who have helped to guide the production of the game.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was revealed at Sony’s Gamescom press conference back in 2014, with development having undergone a number of shifts since then. With the title, Ninja Theory aims to reinvigorate the AA games sector, marrying AAA production values with an indie budget. To reflect this ethos, the game will be a relatively stripped back affair, lasting between six and eight hours and costing half the price of a traditional AAA game.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is scheduled for release on August 8, 2017 on PC and PlayStation 4.
