Zoetrope Interactive, developers of the Darkness Within series, have released the first teaser trailer for their Lovecraftian horror game Conarium.
Taking inspiration from Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness, but mainly set after the novella, the story involves “four scientists and their endeavor to challenge what we normally consider to be the ‘absolute’ limits of nature.”
The trailer is stylish in its first-person perspective, capturing the chilling aesthetic of Lovecraftian horror and showing a brief glimpse of the dangers lurking within the Antarctic base where the game takes place.
The titular Conarium is a strange device which protagonist Frank Gilman uses to attempt to “pass beyond the limits of human consciousness” at the behest of expedition leader Dr. Faust, which opens up the door to the weird and macabre visions and dreams that ooze with the atmosphere of Lovecraft’s work.
Conarium looks to be a great addition to the horror genre, taking cues from one of the genre’s most beloved figures and using the Unreal 4 engine to immerse players in a world rife with secrets and dangers alike.
Look for the game in Q1 2017 on Steam, and later in the year on the Xbox One and PS4.
