A new Kingdom Hearts III trailer debuted at Disney’s D23 Expo this weekend, revealing a range of details including a new world and release window.
For the first time in series history, Sora and his friends will travel to the world of Toy Story, where they will team up with Woody and Buzz Lightyear on a journey to find Andy. The trailer also revealed that players will be able to team up with more than the series-standard three characters, with five party members on display in the trailer.
Speaking to IGN at D23, game director Tetsuya Nomura said that the increased character count was a result of the power of new hardware. “It was actually a compromise in a previous iteration because we were not able to display multiple characters on that platform in that game… Up to five people can join, even more, multiple characters can join your party.” Nomura also hinted that players will take control of a character other than Sora at some point during the game.
Perhaps the biggest Kingdom Hearts III news from D23, however, is the official announcement of a 2018 release for the highly-anticipated game. Unfortunately, the trailer did not provide a more specific release window, but the announcement should put to bed rumours that the project will not release until 2019.
These new revelations follow earlier suggestions that players will be able to customise the characters in the game with cosmetic alterations. In addition, the new Toy Story world joins the previously-revealed Big Hero 6 and Tangled worlds, as well as the return of Olympus from Hercules.
Kingdom Hearts III is set for release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For all the latest on the game and much more from the world of single-player gaming, be sure to bookmark OnlySP and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
