Looking to the Future: Greetings from the new Editor-in-Chief

OnlySP

Hello everyone,

My name is Damien Lawardorn, and, as you may be aware, I am the new Editor-in-Chief of OnlySP, following in the illustrious footsteps of David Nelson, Lachlan Williams, Reid Gacke, and, of course, Nick Calandra.

I want to begin by saying that I am incredibly humbled to be taking up the mantle previously shared by such creative, driven, and talented individuals, and that I am excited to have the chance to nurture and grow the community and respect that their work has developed. To that end, as Nick said in his final address, I will not make any changes to the core philosophy of OnlySP. This outlet will continue to cater exclusively to that subset of gamers who are interested in single-player experiences, and our focus will remain on the news, mechanics and narratives of such games.

To quell the fears and concerns expressed by some of our community members, OnlySP will not engage with the pixel counting, console wars, and flamebait tactics used by so many other websites. Instead, I intend to foster the kind of content that I like to read, that being articles that interest, inform, and challenge the reader. I hope that such content will spur the imagination of our community members, and allow the beginning of dialogues on the subjects under discussion, rather than seeming the final word. Your opinions will, as always, be valued, while personal attacks and the propensity of comments sections to descend into anarchy will not be tolerated. But, if you’ve followed OnlySP for any time, you will know that these have always been among the site’s underpinning tenets.

I want now to look briefly towards the future and let you know how things stand at present. OnlySP currently has only a skeleton staff, and the process of rebuilding will take time. I want to ensure that the writers and content producers that we have on board are the best I can find, and that cannot be achieved overnight. Nevertheless, OnlySP will reopen tomorrow as we head towards a soft relaunch on January 1, 2017. Until then, the team and I will be focussed primarily on behind-the-scenes organisation and preparing content that we hope will interest you. I will share more details on our plans and the shape of the ‘new’ OnlySP on New Year’s Day. If you have any suggestions in the meantime, be sure to leave them in the comments below and we will take them into consideration.

Before signing off (and I’m sure you’ll understand why I’ve left this until last) I feel I should introduce myself formally. As mentioned, my name is Damien, and I have been a part of OnlySP since before it was even a twinkle in Nick’s eye. I was one of the very first writers to join Nick’s team at TitanReviews before it transformed into Velocity Gamer and finally spawned this website. My work as a journalist on these projects formed part of my decision to return to study after six years away, and I recently completed my undergraduate degree, a double major in English Literature and Media & Writing. I aspire to be an author, but journalism is also a calling that speaks to me. My background and interests will shape the future of OnlySP, and I hope that that is no bad thing.

I look forward to having you join me on this journey.
