Frontier Developments, the studio behind Elite: Dangerous and Planet Coaster, has announced plans for a new franchise based on an “enduring movie franchise of global renown.”
While this comment raises many possibilities for the identity of this franchise, only time will tell which IP has been chosen for this endeavor. Chief Executive David Braben said the studio chose the mystery IP because the team at Frontier believes it can “create something very special” with it, and that doing so is “an important next step” in the growth of the studio.
The only other hints are that the IP is “creatively stimulating, already has a high worldwide profile, and is a perfect match for our [Frontier’s] expertise.” Whatever film franchise the studio is teasing, the reveal seems to be worth the wait, and given the success of the studio’s other franchises thus far, fans should not be worried about the secrecy of this new project.
Elite: Dangerous is still going strong, bolstered by the recent addition of alien life forms to its universe, providing players with an unparalleled experience as they explore the stars aboard their very own ship. Planet Coaster, while only being out for a few months, takes the role of spiritual successor to Roller Coaster Tycoon and other amusement park sims to heart, providing a truly spectacular sandbox with which players can craft the theme parks of their dreams.
With such a strong track record already in place, Frontier’s desire to branch out and look at its next move makes sense. While games and films have had some bad relationships in terms of adaptations, many have also succeeded, and this studio seems up to the task in being one of the latter examples. Look to find out more about this new franchise as the year goes on, and be sure to check out Frontier’s other titles in the meantime.
