Far Cry 5 NPCs Will Not Have All The Information

The cult members of Far Cry 5 will respond to the player’s actions with proportionate force, though they may not always be aware of everything that occurs.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, creative director Dan Hay revealed some tidbits regarding NPC behavior and communication in Ubisoft Montreal’s latest installment of the Far Cry series. “Sometimes when we’re authoring a story like this, it seems like all of the characters of the world are cursed with all the knowledge on Earth,” he told writer Miguel Concepcion. “You walk to them, you ask them a question, and they seem to know everything that’s going on.”

To combat this immersion-breaking problem, both allied and enemy NPCs of Far Cry 5 have limited knowledge of events transpiring outside of their local region. “They can be speaking based on what’s going on in the north,” Hay elaborated, “but they don’t know or they’re hearing something else that’s going down in the south.”

This element combines well with the open-world gameplay for which the Far Cry series is known. Players may travel from one Herald’s region to another, discovering new information and opportunities in each cult leader’s territory. Explaining that the development team considered how the members of the Eden’s Gate cult might communicate with each other over long distances, Hay said: “It’s believable for us that if that first moment when things go south, that the cult is getting on CB radios and they’re going, ‘Hey guys. This is what you need to do.’ But not everybody knows what’s going on at the same time.”

In addition to affecting the behavior of NPCs, this simulation of rural isolation has the potential to allow players to employ strategic tactics against the leaders of Eden’s Gate. By splitting their time between different regions led by The Father’s siblings, players may find themselves able to accomplish more while drawing less attention from The Father. However, each of his three lieutenants will respond to player actions using appropriate force. “If you decide to go into John’s region,” Hay said, “And you decide to head directly for the community of resistance fighters, then you go right at the cult. John is going to know who you are really quick [and] offer a proportional response against what you do.”

Far Cry 5 is an upcoming open world action-adventure first-person shooter, developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The eleventh installment and fifth main title in the Far Cry series, Far Cry 5 is scheduled for release on February 27, 2018 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
