Everything You Need to Know About Call of Cthulhu

Call of Cthulhu

Call of Cthulhu is an upcoming first-person survival-horror game created by Cyanide Studio (Styx: Shards of Darkness) that explores the twisted and bewitching world of Lovecraftian fantasy.

Cyanide Studio aims to capture the eerie essence that makes H. P. Lovecraft’s work such a spectacular experience by basing its interpretation on the tabletop RPG of the same name. Injecting mechanics from the board game results in players struggling to balance their health and sanity as they combat the creatures of the deep.

The campaign depicts protagonist Edward Pierce exploring Darkwater Island following a fire that consumed the Hawkins family. As a veteran-turned-private-investigator, Edward must piece together the mystery behind the Hawkins’s disaster one frightful clue at a time.

Early gameplay footage indicates the use of a stats-based system similar to that of the board game. Stats will be split into categories, including influence and psychology, that are needed to deduce puzzles. Higher stats will result in an increased likelihood of accomplishing a task, however, success is never guaranteed, adding an element of luck to each test.

The developers explain that each event will feature multiple ways to engage confrontations, allowing individuals to play to their strengths. Some gamers may want to invest in lore-based skills to learn more about their foes and surroundings, while others are free to charge, guns blazing, at any tentacle-faced enemy in sight.

An example of a dynamic encounter emerges when initially arriving at the manor, as one of the entrances to the grounds is guarded by an axe-wielding housekeeper. Approaching him prompts a dialogue option allowing an attempt to reason with the madman, though failure will force Edward to find another route onto the grounds.

Initial footage shows Edward wading around the burnt remains of the Hawkins’s manor with a lantern in hand, reminiscent of the Amnesia series. Expect a similar sense of dread and uncertainty when delving into the maddening world of cultists and monsters. Sanity will be a key component throughout the story as knowledge gained on the unspeakable terrors will whittle away the character’s mind, causing hallucinations and visions. However, choosing to ignore information will leave Edward vulnerable, and ultimately affect the ending.

Hardcore horror fans will be delighted to know that the developers have discussed plans to implement VR support sometime in the future, following the success of Resident Evil VII.

With mystical monsters and paranormal puzzles, Call of Cthulhu will be a must have for horror fans and those looking for a truly challenging experience. The game is set to be unleashed during the final quarter of 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
