Details on the single-player campaign of Star Wars: Battlefront II, including its main character and time span, have continued to emerge following the game’s official unveiling last weekend.
After 2015’s reboot of the Battlefront series was roundly criticised for failing to include a story campaign, DICE has taken a similar approach to Respawn Entertainment with last year’s Titanfall 2 and added one for the sequel. This campaign will focus on a previously unmentioned character, Iden Versio, a member of an elite Imperial military outfit known as Inferno Squad, and will follow her adventures across approximately 30 years, beginning with the destruction of the second Death Star and ending around the time of The Force Awakens.
While little information about the characters and events of the campaign have been released, the developers are aiming to bridge the gap between the original Star Wars trilogy and the latest, showing how the Empire has morphed since the days of Palpatine, and to humanise the side that has traditionally been seen as the villains.
As with the multiplayer, the campaign’s gameplay promises to be incredibly diverse, ranging from the expected gunplay, to giving players the ability to pilot various ships. The character profile of Iden also suggests that stealth-based missions will be included. The developers will also change things up by giving players control of various “hero” characters, including Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren at key points of the story.
While DICE is heading development of the game, this single-player segment is being created by Jade Raymond’s Motive Studio in collaboration with Lucasfilm. This game represents the first outing for the studio, although Jade Raymond is known for her work on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. In addition, the game is being co-written by Walt Williams (Spec Ops: The Line, Mafia II). The character of Iden Versio, meanwhile, will be played by Janina Gavankar, best known for her work on True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and Sleepy Hollow, though she also played a role in Far Cry 4.
Finally, the previously announced Star Wars novel Inferno Squad was recently revealed as a tie-in prequel to Star Wars: Battlefront II, meaning that those who want the full story may want to look into picking up the book.
The game is scheduled to release on November 17, 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
