Fight the Human Invasion in Attack of the Earthlings

Attack of the Earthlings

Team Junkfish, the Scottish indie studio behind 2015’s Monstrum, has announced its next project, a turn-based sci-fi strategy game called Attack of the Earthlings.

The game inverts expectations by casting players as an alien race, known as Swarmers, which must fight to defend its homeworld, Planet X13, from the machinations of a human corporation. Taking the comedic aspects of this premise to heart, the team is building a game that brings ridiculousness to the fore with the ultimate enemy being “upper management.”

Attack of the Earthlings draws inspiration from the likes of XCOM and Invisible, Inc. with the gameplay focus being strategic, turn-based combat. Players will have to infiltrate the space-drill being used to mine Planet X13 and use guerrilla tactics to overcome the human opposition. In a unique wrinkle to the gameplay, however, players will grow their forces by killing and consuming fallen foes, as their biological matter is used to create more friendly units with an expanding range of roles and special abilities.

A brief look at both the humour and gameplay is available in the announcement trailer embedded below:

The game is a marked departure from the team’s previous project, the horror game Monstrum, with the studio’s co-founder Simon Doyle calling it “a breath of fresh air for Junkfish.”

Anyone unfamiliar with Team Junkfish’s previous work can find out more in the exclusive interview that OnlySP conducted with the team back in 2014, which explored the technology and design ethic behind Monstrum.

Attack of the Earthlings is currently targeting a summer 2017 release exclusively for PC.
